Position yourself in a double “gedan barai”. The front kick, called mae geri in Japanese, is certainly the main kick in traditional karate of all styles. It is the most used kick in traditional kata forms and the most practiced kick in traditional ki-hon practice. The kick is a very strong and fast strike, and easier to master than less “natural” kicks. Mae-geri is a kick designed to go forward, not up, so the use of the hips and tailbone are hugely important. I have seen people who look great performing Mae-Geri with no partner (Kata is a prime example), they can appear fast and sharp but as soon as you put a target in front of them the kick becomes ineffective. According to many Okinawan masters Sanchin Kata is based directly on exercises taught by Daruma.
